Does someone have to be an alpha male to be a Dom ?

If someone can define what the fuck “Alpha male” even MEANS, I could maybe answer this. About the only character trait that I would flag as a must-have to be a successful Dominant is a desire and ability to LEAD.

I can answer that @instructor144 !

An “Alpha”male is an early, buggy, poorly written, not meant to be seen by the public version of a male. Kinda like a first draft, or a baby. Should not be released freely in public.

Aaand… @ohmycanadada wins the internet this afternoon!

Incidentally the whole “alpha/beta male” thing has been pretty thoroughly discarded, not least by the naturalist who coined the term.  It’s not so much that pecking orders don’t exist in non-captive wolf populations, it’s that it’s based far more on seniority and experience than “genetic prowess.”  This isn’t to say we don’t see pecking orders in nature, but I guess it’s just not as sexy and testicular sounding for manly men to go around calling themselves “alpha hens.”

Anybody can be a Dom!  From the most brutish-looking hulk to the most demure teenager.  Speaking of hulks, for all his temper, strength, and size dollars to donuts The Incredible Hulk would be Subby as hell in a relationship with (pre-2009) Betty Ross.

A better question might be “does being an ‘alpha male’ have anything to do at all with being a Dom?”
