i miss the era where rapist and pedophile men were rounded up and slaughtered at a festival in honor of the goddess artemis, protector of girls

Let’s bring that back. How do we do that?

by rounding up all the rapist and pedophile men and slaughtering them at festivals in honor of the goddess artemis, protector of girls

I used to want to do that too.  Then an anthropology prof mentioned that societies tend to reserve the harshest punishment for the crimes its members most wish to commit themselves.

It didn’t help that in the same course we learned about English Common Law’s definition of rape as a property crime committed not against the victim but against the victim’s custodial male – usually her father or husband.  The “property” in question not being the whole human being who was attacked but a thin little membrane partially spanning the entrance of her vagina.  Which amounted, under the law, to her entire worth.  (This also helped explain society’s almost total indifference to sexual assault against married women, “fallen” women, and of course men and boys.  No property to damage, no property crime! ????)

I’ve thought about that a lot.  And now my sincere feeling is that I really don’t miss that era at all.

And now my sincere belief is that society needs to protect its members from rapists and pedophiles.  And it’s my belief that a really, really good way to do that would be… early but ordinary incarceration plus extraordinary therapy.

Which, to be honest, would be a hell of a lot simpler, lower drama, and lower-stakes, which in turn might do something about society’s fucking problem seeking and obtaining arrests and convictions!

Because seriously, 99% dead certainty of 10 years in prison would be one shit-ton more of a deterrent than the current status quo of 1% chance of a life sentence.  (Just saying.)

Minus the slaughtering, festivals in honor of the goddess Artemis sound awesome!
